SANKOFICTION
Twenty years ago, before Black Panther entered mainstream cinema, I felt a deep need for African superheroes. This continent had so much to offer, and I was aware that I knew only a fraction of its cultures, histories, and stories. Yet even the small portion I came to know — the Ghanaian accounts of Komfo Anokye and Osei Tutu I, and the role of Yaa Asantewaa in the Fifth Anglo-Ashanti War — inspired me so deeply that I began to build a continuing story in my mind, one that carried these heroes into the future.
It could become an animation, a film, a game, or all of these at once. That didn't matter to me: what fascinated me first was creating the characters and the environments of this future. The Sankofiction concept drawings and paintings became my final-year project at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
They were the foundation of everything that followed — and the story is not over yet.
The Sankofiction series consists of inked drawings, pencil drawings, digital paintings, and silkscreen prints.
